Why and How to Orient Trees using the Damanhur Selfica Pendulum
*Disclaimer: the scientific aspect of this work presented at the beginning of this article is from my own intuitive perceptions. I do have a science background, which just gives me the awareness that I am not speaking from a place of total authority!
Why to Orient Trees?
Trees play such an important role in Earth’s ecology! Without them and the oxygen they create we could not likely survive, the planet would get even hotter than it is now. Yet the changing climate also presents a threat to their well-being, so it is imperative that we support them any way we can.
The good people at Damanhur, a spiritual community in Italy, have created a means to connect trees with an electromagnetic grid that supports the tree-human relationship.
While using the pendulum, I came to understand that this electromagnetic grid exists at the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere, the same level that creates the Aurora Borealis. The Aurora is created when electromagnetic energy from the Sun hits the Earth’s atmosphere, this field of charged particles holds the energy of this grid.
What is a selfica pendulum?
The selficas from Damanur that are created for orienting trees consist of a small magnet surrounded by twisted copper wire. The copper conducts electricity and the magnet provides a magnetic charge. Together they create an electromagnetic field that can be programmed with intention. This site has more information:

How to Orient Trees?
This part is very simple! All you have to do is hold the pendulum and walk around the tree three times. The pendulum has been programmed with the intention of connecting trees to the grid, so your part is very straightforward! In general I go clockwise but it is not required, you can go in either direction.
Before orienting it is nice to check in with the tree and be sure that it wants to be oriented, but i have never come across one that has said no. To do this, just say ‘I ask to be connected to this tree. Am I connected?’ Check with your pendulum to get a yes or no answer. Then ask ‘would you like to be oriented?’ And again use your pendulum to get a yes or no answer.
How do you know which trees to orient?
This is the fun part! When you come to a grouping of trees, you get to check in with the spirits of the trees to determine how best to proceed. It is generally not possible to orient ALL of the trees in a forest or stand, so you have to choose which are going to be the most impactful, which trees can hold the energy to support all of the other trees in the area.
General rules for orienting
The general goal is to orient a representative sample of trees within a given stand. So we start by taking a general survey – how many different species are present? Which ones seem significantly larger or older than the others? These might be considered the ‘mother trees’, you definitely want to orient them first so they can assist all of their younger cohorts.
Once you have a sense of the variety of species and who the elders are, then you can assess their distribution across the landscape. I like to consider sacred geometry when i am orienting, so I think about what shape is being created by the oriented trees.
Start by locating the oldest trees in each species, then assess the whole field. If there are bunch of old trees all in one area, I might just orient a selection of those so I can be sure to orient trees in other areas.
For areas with fewer older or larger trees, check in and see which might be the largest or oldest in those areas, and orient those. Sometimes there are trees that aren’t the largest but have stronger personalities, they call out to be included!
I also try to orient a variety of species in each area. So if one side of an area is mainly fir with a few pine, and the other side is mainly pine with a few fir, I orient some pine and some fir on both sides.
I also look for trees that are easier to orient. Some trees have thick bushes around their base, or there is a steep drop off on one side that would make walking around them very challenging. I don’t orient those, and instead look for others nearby that can hold the energy for that area.
The other tip I have is to be mindful of how you are counting your circuits! You only have to go around the tree three times but still i find sometimes I forget, am I counting at the beginning of a circle or at the end?
I have found it easiest to count at the end, and I fold one finger into my palm with each turn. So I walk around once, fold my thumb in and say ‘one’. Then at the end of the second, I fold my pointer finger and say ‘two’. At the end of the third I fold my middle finger and say ‘three’, then I am certain that I am complete! You can certainly go around four times, but I get annoyed with myself for not being able to keep it straight.
Does it work?
The best evidence I have for the effectiveness of this is the feeling of trees that have been oriented. With practice you can feel the difference! They feel more solid, more alive, more vibrant.
I hope this helps you start your tree orienting journey! it is really fun and rewarding to know that you are assisting in planetary well-being, and also a great way to build your connection to trees. You do refine your sensitivity with practice so I encourage you to try it whenever and wherever you can!
